Newton's biggest downside was his 1 year playing football, playing in an offense that usually calls for a harder transition into the NFL. He took a lot of snaps in the shotgun. He ran a lot of read option. You just don't see that in the NFL.

Newton has done a lot better than expected, but he still has a ways to go before he becomes a elite NFL passer.

not that far, and he is still in his rookie season

Maybe in terms of traditional qb, but he is performing like a top 5 qb today.
