How is Vandy able to survive the SEC?
Good question. Vandy is comparable to Tulane up until 1966. And Vandy hasn't finished in the AP poll since 1948. They have 4 winning seasons since 1959.

How does Northwestern survive the Big Ten, or Stanford survive the PAC-12?
Both those schools can find their way to the Rose Bowl now and again. And Northwestern and Stanford are in huge metros so that is a big plus for their respective conferences. Odds of Vandy ever making it to the Sugar Bowl? Negative. I honestly think the SEC hasn't run Vandy off simply because they boost our academic standing.
Long story short, Vandy has profited financially as you say. But could Tulane have predicted that in 1966, long before cable TV and ESPN would revolutionize the TV market? It was a very different world then.
