If I've learned anything in my years, it's that what you hear people tell you publicly is very, very seldom completely true and accurate. It's what they want you to hear, and the way they want you to hear it.
I prefer to talk a look at the "my damn strong football team" pregame announcement, and then watch the Tigers dismantle Ohio State again.

Miles made that speech before the SEC championship game against Tennessee, when RP11 had a great game to win. we then went on to beat OSU in the BCS game.
Saban was announced as Bama's new coach the year before, around noon, the day we beat the shite out of ND in the Sugar Bowl.
which, technically, it was the same year, just the Saban announcement and Sugar Bowl was in January, and Miles pregame press conference was in December in Atlanta.
