That was my guess when Merle lost his hand and disappeared. He will come back as the governor and will make Rick suffer (possibly by killing Lori is my guess).
Don't expect Rick to lose his hand though. Robert Kirkman said this was one of his biggest regrets in the graphic novel series. I doubt it happens in the show

The hand was fricked anyway when he beat up the child killer in the prison.

Seriously? That sucks. I thought him losing the hand would add depth to his character. You think Merle losing his was kind of paying tribute to that in a way?
