Pretty much nailed it.

And the "why can't we have night games every week?!?? We've had a night game before!!!" crowd chimes in.

This.
Or why can't CBS just move LSU to a night spot.
Or why can't LSU put their footdown and demand night games.

Actually, there aren't as many hard heads as you would think, but they still need to be educated.

What is there to "fix"?

LSU having night games?

No matter how many times it's brought up to why a night game isn't reality at this time, people will just keep asking "why cant LSU play a night game????"

hopefully this ends all the talk about the extra $300k for CBS day games.

so ESPN can say, "frick you, we control the nights?"

There is a give and take in negotiations. It's probably more or less in line with CBS getting first choice in games, they have to sacrifice having night games with a one game exemption.

I'm telling you that a Hawaii 5-0 repeat costs them almost nothing in comparison to the investment that is a live college football broadcast.

It's more than just a ratings game.

CBS is more than just a sports network. They have a varied list of programming priorities.

i get that. so is ABC. and what do i see scheduled for ABC saturday night? a football game.

ABC is the broadcast arm of ESPN and has different priorities.

It'll do well, bama and LSU. But not as well as their normal shows.

There is no way they would air LSU/Bama at night during sweeps period.

I love night games much more than 2:30 kickoffs. Don't get me wrong.

But that's just the way things are with the hand that has been dealt.

LSU is a winning program, and CBS gets first pick of the games. #1 team in the country carries weight with sponsors ect.

I understand both sides, but I'm a realist. I know where LSU's bread is buttered. Where they get their money from.

I'm also a fan, of course i want night games.
I like to tailgate and drink/eat all day.

But I know that things are the way they are for a reason, and that reason is a lot of $$$$.

The sec and CBS chartered this deal.

LSU football whether you want to admit it or not, is a product that CBS wants to sell to big markets and get sponsors for.

Like I said, of course I'm a fan, but I also understand all the aspects of the situation CBS, LSU, and the sec are currently in.

------------------

You are right on a lot. I agreed that it is the hand we were dealt, no disputing that from me. I understand that the SEC/CBS chartered the deal, but I think it was the SEC, who in trying to preserve the chances of its teams being televised/covered, limited CBS (who would take more night games), in an attempt to gain dollars for the games CBS wouldn't choose first, by offering rights to ESPN/ABC. Since 2 or more are vying for the same product, LSU is winning and first rights go to CBS, we lose out on night games.

But this is not something that has to continue to take place. No contract is set in stone. Imagine if no one were to bring the issue to the AD, or complain about it in general. Would it be assumed that its not something that is important to the fan base?

CBS simply having one more option per year for a night game would increase our probability of scoring a night time broadcast, but this would mean the anti-first choice/marquee game schedule ESPN receives would have to be sweetened.

If you agree and are in support of night games, you can be a realist without blocking the efforts of those trying to petition. Letting the AD hear it is how we lobby for a change. He is the one that is in contact with the SEC and CBS, not us Joe Blows.

He can bring our case, promise to champion the cause and let us know how/if we can participate.

LSU is a money making product. That one point cannot be argued. Anytime we play, we draw a big audience. Night game or not.

You might think so, and yet FOX will air MLB this week instead of Glee.

Actually I know a lot about contract negotiations. I also know that as a member university of the SEC that we have a representative present, and have to individually agree to the terms set for in nay contract signed by the SEC, as do all other member schools.

Lobbying for a clause to allow you to insure one night SEC home game per season is not an unreasonable request in such negotiations.

So wtf were you talking about?

HAHA, Boom. Good job CptBengal. I hate "fans" like that idiot who will just concede defeat and call others dumb for not doing the same.

That's actually not at all what was going on here, at least for the most part. Seemed like a lot of much more levelheaded discussions in this thread than just that, to me.

But, way to look every bit as goofily extreme on the flipside as the goofy extremists you think you're railing against.

The time for all this displeasure/outrage with LSU/AD/SEC/CBS was before the current contract was developed/signed and not after the fact.

Now, it's nothing but pissing into the wind.

Reminds a tad of the USC reaction in 03 to the BCS formula when they missed out on the BCSNC.

Seriously? Out of the entirety of that post you pull one sentence and try to make fun of it?

The growing disparity between what the market (SEC and LSU fans), the producers (SEC schools), and the suppliers (CBS and ESPN) all want is what needs fixing.

A win-win situation where the SEC, CBS, LSU, and the fans all get as much of what they want is the goal, and it is an achievable goal.
