It is a little funny that it only counts his defensive TDs

I believe that is one place CW made a big name for himself. TM7 has yet to make a big splash in the return game. He has a long way to go though. I am sure he will make his own mark on posterity. As I said in another thread... he hss a chance for a Heisman if he keeps making big plays on the way to a national championship. NO NC - no Heisman no matter what he does.

Woodson 1:24

Go to 1:24 and you'll see the punt return for six Woodson had against Ohio State. Big play in a big game. UM ended up winning 20-14 and eventually beat Washington St in the Rose Bowl. TM7 needs big time plays like this to really have shot.

I used to believe that too, but then this thread got me to look up his stats...and well....meh.

In 1997 (Woodson's Heisman year), his return stats are as follows:

36 Punt Returns
301 total punt return yards
8.4 yard average
long of 78 yards
1 touchdown

(He didn't have any kickoff returns.)

https://bentley.umich.edu/athdept/football/fballam/aawoodsn.htm

Now, it looks like Woodson did play some offense in 1997 as well, so I'm sure that helped with the Heisman a bit. His 1997 defensive stats look average to good, IMO.

The graphic posted in the OP is a bit misleading. If someone would create one that compared them both fairly, then I still think TM7 would look at least on par with Woodson thus far into the season.

I know that you're right, but that just goes to prove how idioctic the process is. If it truly was an award for "the best college football player in the nation" then a single play would not have as much sway on voters. But the fact that it does just contributes to the notion that the Heisman is simply a popularity award....which is fine and all....I just wish they'd be honest about it.

it's cool but the Heisman is based on one years body o work...not the entire college career

Heisman has never been anything more than a beauty contest. And this year we have the prettiest girl in the show.

Yep, and if you take out the 78 yard return....he averaged 6.3 yards per return.

Champ Bailey was better than Woodson in all phases of the game.
