I probably enjoyed it more than I should have because my dad thought it was hilarious. He regarded it as the best recent attempt at a "Cosby Show."

What?
I just liked that terminology.

I wish I was more familiar with Modern Family and Parks. Doesn't sound like the office is a similar show as those though. The office is a mockumentary. The "4th wall" is never broken.

quote:that's not entirely true. There are still instances where it is implied that it's still a documentary. ie, when michael leaves for colorado he asks the camera guy/producer if he will let him know "when this thing airs"
basically de facto abandoned the documentary aspect and just adopted the interviews as artistic license.
but the UK version was absolutely better at making you feel that it was a true documentary

Noted, but nobody could possibly buy the premise that employees would continue to be willing to air all of their personal lives on air.

Right. And since it was only 2 seasons, basically the characters had never seen how they came off on TV or felt the repercussions of revealing private information on air.

Good analogy. It's like a modern day Cosby... kind of. I really liked the Bernie Mac show too. RIP Bernie

Have you seen the "employees" of Dunder Mifflin? If any group would, that group would.

Sorry, Stanley simply would not.

They leave the office environment way too much. I realize a show must "grow" and everything, but come on
quote:and I loveddddd how the christmas special uses the airing of the documentary as a plot device, ie David's "fame". Just brilliant writing IMO

Can't believe no one has mentioned Trailer Park Boys in this thread. Looks like they were doing this style show the same time as the UK Office or earlier. The camera crew even gets way more involved than any of the others that I've seen.

It's not really the same thing since it is a less serious format but Monty Python would do that in some of their sketches. It may have evolved into more conventional TV shows from that kind of thing. Also, I'm pretty sure Green Acres did it occasionally though I'd be hard pressed to prove it.
