Nobody could beat the Bear in the 1970's. mac got in trouble win LSU was picked to win the SEC title in 1974 and went 5-5-1, then 6-4-1, 8-4,8-4 and 7-5. Also, LSU was picked to win the NCAA championship in '72 (Bert's senior year)and went 9-2-1 and lost to Tennennesse in the Astro-Bluebonnet bowl. Lost to Tulane in 1973 and after winning their first 9-games lost their final three.

It wasn't just about not beating the Bear. Charley Mac underachieved, there's no other way to slice it. He was a good coach, but lacked what it took to get us to the next level, unlike his predecessor, who I would argue accomplished more than Saban at LSU.

I agree...Mac's season records took a nose dive from the 5 or so 9 win seasons in a row his teams had put up.
Mac won 69% of his games.
The amazing thing with Miles is that he is having this kinda success at a time when the SEC is stronger/deeper than at anytime in its history as demostrated by the SEC winning the last 5 BCS titles and that by 4 different teams!!
