Drew Brees Leadership and Individual Effort

When it seems like a player/s are not playing to the level of their talent/potential (Evans on Offense and Porter on defense for example)
Does Drew Brees "Leadership" have more/less/doesn't matter on individual effort at practice or on the field? I can definitely see both sides to this and would like you fellow Saint Fans input.
If Drew DOES have a huge role as a motivator and leader, then why does the effort of some players seem so poor? If he Does NOT have a huge role as a motivator then is he really a great "Leader" after all.
I AM NOT CALLING OUT DREW BREES. I am just curious by those that might have insight into the inner workings of a locker room how much leadership from a player such as him would/could affect effort/potential of other grown men.

Brees is gonna have a monster year, he may break records this year. Saints better re-sign him fast as they can. There was a report on the radio yesterday that the two sides are far apart. I'm sure it will get done but if not it would be the single biggest mistake in the history of the NFL

Effort is there. But the execution has just sucked on defense at times.
