If the stuff about Lowery turns out to be accurate, then by and large I'd expect JJ to be very well received by many casual Tiger fans. This whole business of kicking someone down in the parking lot; just look at it in this light. Say the guy (marine, 215 pounds, history of trouble) WAS stalking/harrassing an 18 yr old girl. I'll bet there are many people that would say he merited a bigger beating than he received. Especially those who have daughters of their own.
