Pretty disappointing to read that breaking rules isn't a big deal to you. A navy officer.

Agreed from what I've known Naval officers are some of the most stringent enforcers of the standard.

Jesus Christ. I almost let this one go, but screw it.

Because I live in a scary place called the "real world", I recognize that no one follows every rule at all times. Breaking some rules = serious business (like stomping some dudes head, for instance). Curfew could be serious were it a work night, or during preps for a deployment or operation. But breaking curfew (a 2230 curfew at that) on a Thursday night in college is not a big deal. I'm sorry. Maybe I have one of those convoluted nuanced perspectives, but in and of itself, a curfew is generally not a big deal.

If someone in my charge was caught doing so on a routine night, I'd be compelled to punish him or her. Obviously the circumstances would dictate the sanction. What I object to is the moral outrage over something so mundane. They're fricking college kids. Young men are going to do shite like this. That something more came of it is unfortunate, even tragic. But that's a separate matter. The problem with you "law and order" types is that you think everything needs to be settled at the highest level with the most exacting punishment prescibable. I think things should be dealt with in-house, whenever possible, and escalated only out of necessity.

If you were a military officer you'd know how much time you could spend on paperwork if you drew up an article 15/Captain's Mast everytime some seaman/PFC did something stupid.
