Jones delivered his pledge to Coach Bo Pelini via telephone following a final consultation with his father Cal and mother Tahonas, who signed off on his decision. Jones is Nebraska's sixth commitment for 2012 and was recruited by former LSU defensive back Corey Raymond, now the Cornhuskers secondary coach.

"I chose Nebraska because they're a defensively-minded school and they recruited me as a linebacker,'' Jones said. "I developed a real good relationship with Coach Raymond. I felt comfortable talking with him. He was real with me. He gave me good advice. Then I started looking up (information about) Nebraska to learn more about them. They have really good facilities.

"I had been waiting for LSU and Alabama to see if they were going to offer. But that made me look at other schools. That got me to asking my parents about how they would feel about me going away to school. That got them talking to Coach Raymond and then they became comfortable and felt good about (Nebraska).''

The clincher, Jones said, was when "Coach Raymond assured my dad that they would take care of me and make sure that I go to class, and that he'll take care of me like I'm one of his own. My parents liked what he said.''

LSU's coaching staff had indicated through Keiser that a scholarship offer was to be extended when Jones participated in the Tigers' final summer football camp in late July following his participation in Alabama's camp.

But Jones missed the LSU camp due to a death in his family, according to his father Cal, after the younger Jones had participated in Alabama's camp just days earlier. Neither Cal or Deion Jones contacted the LSU staff and the offer was withdrawn.

LSU accepted commitments from Katy, Texas, Morton Ranch defensive end Danielle Hunter and DeSoto, Texas, cornerback Jalen Mills instead on July 20.

Jones had participated in LSU's 2010 camp in the summer prior to his junior year and was selected as a team MVP.

"I made a big mistake'' in not calling, Cal Jones, who grew up in Algiers with LSU running backs coach and recruiting coordinator Frank Wilson, said. "It's a business and I understand.''

Sounds like LSU wanted him and he wanted LSU. Hard to believe they couldn't communicate what happened & work something out.
