Yea the fanbase collectively was definitely speculating a lot about that. It did sort of seem like Thomas was being instructed to avoid running on his own and use his playmakers instead. And given that his true back-up was redshirting (Bryan Bennett) it sort of figures that they would try to protect him.
Things might be different this season - with him having added some valuable pounds, and Bennett having come off of his redshirt.
