I've always been told that Mac made sure the turf grass was kept taller than normal for that game. The reason was that UN had a lot of speed & the taller grass was an advantage to LSU because it slowed down UN. I was also told by someone who followed the Tigers closely back then that their coach said he would never play @ LSU again.

I don't know about the grass, but it is more likely that Nebraska had a size advantage than a speed advantage. LSU was very small in those days and Nebraska players were huge.
