How about this:

quote:

I am new to this star wars thing .. and just got into it having a deep interesting in its sci fi aspect and its philosophy.

I am not an expert in these matters, but perhaps this interpretation may be of help.
I am from an enginerring/business background, and am fond of quantitative ways of explaning things - so forgive me if the following explanation sounds nerdy:

potential jedi power = f(midiclorin, efficient use of midiclorin) ---> in general the more midi u have, the great the liklihood of your power

actual jedi power = summation (midiclorin use)

midiclorin use = {wisdom, strength, skill, charity, prediction of future, extra-ordinary power}

EXAMPLE 1: (easy case)
======================
A has 50 midi
B has 40 midi
A and B have same midi efficiency
Therefore A has a higher jedi potential than B

EXAMPLE 2: Efficiency
======================
A has 50 midi
B has 40 midi
B has a greater midi efficiency than A
Therefore B has a higher jedi potential than A

**** IMPORTANT ***
Notice that the _efficient_ use of midi produces the end jedi power.
This is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT because most of jedi literature is based on Chinesse/Zen philosophy and martial arts.

An analogy is the best way to explain:
2 students (A and B) approach a master (M)
A has more raw skill and potential than B ---> i.e. A has greater midi than B
Both A and B start their training to HONE their midi to increase their midi-use abilities {wisdom, skills, etc.}
A is inefficient in his learning (e.g. lazy, arrogant, etc.)
B is efficient in his learning (e.g. dedicated, persistent, consistent, etc.)
as a result despite the fact that A has a higher (jedi) potential than B,
B has a higher actual (jedi) power than A.
