Easy Open

Does it bother anyone else how easy the course played?
With Rory beaking records and about 20 people finishing under par seems to me the USGA got weak on the course set up.
I'd personally rather to have a major that the players have to battle.

Can you say R-A-I-N?
The USGA would have certainly like a firmer set up but the rain this week softened the course. If you exclude Rory's score, the remaining scores weren't too out of line given the soft conditions.

Honestly, yes. Each major has a different feel. A score like this in the Masters or PGA is fine. But the US Open is "supposed" to be ridiculously tough. That's what makes it unique. Do I think having the winner finish above par is a little too extreme? Yeah, maybe. But there shouldn't be 20 people under par (and yes, I realize the weather impacted that a little, but stuff like moving up the tees and that is dumb).

I really think they made it easier on purpose hoping someone would step up and become a "star". I am sure they are happy with the outcome.

I believe that as well.

This.
Plus the fact that the temps were 100 + the previous week which stunted the growth of the rough.

Not taking anything from Rory but yeah they set that course up way to easy. They actually moved up the tees after they had gotten rain. Come on these are the best players in the world, test them and play the course from the tips. I want to see the whole bag given a workout and espically long iron approach shots.

The course was less difficult. But they all played the same course and no one came within a free 18 hole round of Rory.
I was glad to see Rory walk, no run, away with it wire to wire.

I agree....rough wasn't nearly penal enough. Rory was like 25th in fairway percentage but 1st in GIR. I think that, while Rory's performance was still exceptional, the course wasn't hard enough to feel like a "real" US Open.

It felt more like a PGA Championship then a US Open, which is slightly disappointing to me.

It could have more to do with Rory, as Jason day stated. "lapping the field".

I thought it set up more like a PGA at first until I went and looked at the average PGA score. He would have won 50 out of the last 53 PGA's with 16 under.

USGA blew it on this one. Moving the tees up on a wet course is a bad move. These are the best players in the world so lets see them hit some long irons into the par 4's and some 3 shot par 5's? Driver wedge is not that stern of championship test.

That was part of it, but there were still way more people under par than a normal open.
And I'm not buying the rain excuse. If the USGA tards were too stupid to not have the foresight to think that it might possibly rain in Maryland in mid-June then they deserve all the criticism they are about to fairly get. It was a joke of a U.S. Open. But that takes nothing away from Rory--everybody played the same course.
