Big difference is that if you lose control of the river and it changes course BR and NOLA stay dry. And I honestly think dredging could be done to keep the cities working due to the lower sediment deposits.

One thing to think about... what happens to the ports of N.O. and B.R. if ocean going vessels have a navigable bypass (the atchafalaya entering the M.R. north of the old bridge in Baton Rouge) that will allow them to travel to ports farther north.
