Nintendo DS - Best portable gaming device?

I'm going to be in the middle of nowhere North Dakota for about 3 months so looking for some ways to occupy myself.
I was thinking of getting a Nintendo DS or something of the sort. I haven't kept up with the hand held gaming world lately so I could use some suggestions on which device to buy and some games.
I'm a big fan of turn based RPGs, action RPGs, and some adventure games. Not into first person shooter types at all.

I enjoy the shite out of my DS except the time to play it rarely presents itself.
They just released the 3DS which is supposed to be kind of cool. I've played it and I have to be honest, I'm not a huge fan. But because of it you should probably be able to pick up an original DS or DSi for pretty cheap.
Here is a list of a bunch of RPG games: LINK

If you like RPGs, the the DS is absolutely the way to go. The 3DS plays DS games as well, but the 3DS software isn't quite there yet. The launch lineup is pretty mediocre. Ocarina of Time 3D does come out in June, though

you can get a lot of these types of games on the iphone, if you have one. if not, sure, a used DS would be the best bet.

No it is not. I find an iphone or any phone with solitaire or chess or games in general the best protable gaming device. seeing as how if im "gaming" i'm at home and will be playing xbox or wii or a PC. the only time I need a protable gaming device is if im taking a shite and my phone goes everywhere with me.

Until the iphone has actual buttons, I can't take it seriously as a true gaming device. I agree with you that it is nice for little 5 minute games. But I travel a lot, and I need something a little meatier than angry birds or doodle jump. Buttons are a must.

I was thinking about getting the 3DS today, but after reading online about the bad battery life, I'm gonna wait til they make it better.

there are a ton of great RPGs available for the iphone - and that's the genre that the OP asked about.

Bumping this thread.
You've got me looking into buying a DS or DSi too. Whats the difference between the two? Which one should I go for?
ETA: I managed to find one useful site (not blocked by work) to explain a few differences. I think ill get the DSi.

I think they also made a DS that was larger than the DS and DSi. I would look into that because I play my sons here and there and it's kinda tough even for a ps3 user.

Sounds good. I already bought a black DSi off ebay for 81$ though. Now im just trying to see what games (besides mario bros and zelda) to get.
