Yep this is true. Yankees vs Red Sox might be one of the closest you can compare to Euro soccer clubs.
I would have to agree. I've been wracking my brain for something comparable but there just isn't.
Now in the NCAA's there definitely is.

Celtics - Lakers isn't far away.
Dodgers - Giants?
Eagles - Cowboys?
Bruins - Canadiens?
Those games have sizzle, even when the teams aren't very good.
And as mentioned, the I-95 teams, Pacific NW teams, Houston - Dallas, and Rocky Mountain MLS teams are gaining traction in their rivalries.
