FWIW, when I was in school at LSU in the early to mid 1970s, the name "Tigers" was never used at Auburn. They were known as the Plainsmen and/or the War Eagles. Yeah, I know, their fans today will claim that "War Eagle" is just a cheer, but they were known as the Plainsmen and the War Eagles back then, take your pick. I remember seeing game day programs with the name "War Eagles" on it both at LSU and at Auburn (I was in Tiger Band and we travelled for a road game there in 1973).

The name "Tigers" did not emerge at Auburn until sometime in the 1980s--for what reason is anyone's guess. Why "Tigers" now; who knows?
