At most schools women's b-ball is a net money loser but it can be not only profitable on its own but a help to the athletic department as a whole. Just look at Connecticut and Tennessee. Even as far back as the mid-80's Texas was the dominant program and they drew better than any men's team in the conference (disclaimer - I attended back then, women's ball was second only to football and up there with baseball).

It does, however, require a good bit of real investment in good coaches and facilities, just like excellence in any other sport.
