ETA: I have a PS3, so I can already stream NEtflix through my TV (as well as Hulu). But if this gives me the option to watch live UFC stuff plus NBA/NHL games without paying anything more than the initial cost of the box... I may just have to do that.
I have an X360 and I find that both the PS3 and X360's are gaming systems that multitask. The ROKU is much like you just said but works more like "apps" that you subscribe too. It has an intuitive remote and it's easy to order VOD movies from Amazon etc...
The box is really small, cheap, and is designed for MEDIA only so the GUI is super user friendly. The setup is a breeze with either wifi or direct LAN. I'm actually thinking about traveling with it and an HDMI cable at hotels but I don't think they will let me change their video inputs. BTW... Droid/iPhone/iPad have Roku apps that you can use instead of a remote. It's not fancy but it's quick and simple.

So you do have to pay for the extra services though? Like the NBA/NHL/UFC stuff?
That content isn't just free through the box, right?
