Search is your friend.
Anything worth doing is worth doing right. Take the time to read through the threads in the search above, gleen any tips and tricks you want to use, apply that knowledge and boil away.
The only way to get good is to practice. I'm not sure there is a "sure fire recipe". Every body likes to do it their own way. Start with what you know from helping your buddy, try a few things from the search and by next season, you'll be good to go.
If you want to make damn certain they are great for your wife's boil, pay someone to boil them for you.
