Fellow kung-fu arse-kickin movie fans, do not be fooled by a couple of awesome action scenes in a preview as I was. I bought it based on two fight scenes (his first one w/ the mask and costume and the mass arse-kicking near the end) that I saw in a preview video. So I buy the movie and pop it in. It starts with great promise as there's a violent opening WWI flashback scene that's like a hybrid of Bruce Lee and Rambo. I was pumped!

What ensued was a boring, confusing, cheesy blatant pro-China/anti-Japanese propaganda snooze-fest that would make Ip Man blush. (Not that I didn't love Ip Man but it was rife w/ pro-China/anti-Japanese overtones that were borderline distracting.) Turns out that the two fight scenes I saw comprised about half of the actual action in the almost 2-hour movie.

Oh, and the subtitles were shoddy as hell. I understand that's probably my version that I got but it just added to my annoyance/frustration with being duped into buying this. (Yes, I often buy kung fu movies for my collection when I feel like they can't miss.)

So outside of about 10-15 minutes of awesome action, the movie sucked donkey arse. I hope you all learn from my failure and spare yourselves.

Thnx for the heads up and it's not anti Japanese propaganda when it's how the Chinese were really treated by the japs during that time.

I totally understand that it's based in reality but they lay it on pretty thick. It seems to be endemic in the Chinese films of recent years moreso than ever to promote this "us against the world" attitude. All non-Chinese characters were evil or stupid and cowardly(including westerners). I just wanted to see more arse-kicking. I'm a big Donnie Yen fan and a fan of most incarnations of the Legend of the Fist story. Had there been more action, I would've been more receptive to the message part.

I was really disappointed in Blade II in the fact that Yen was in the movie and really didn't have any kick arse scenes!
