take the time to get a coin magazine (take a quick scan of the collection, you may have a few numastically valuable coins). Most of those coins are 90% silver. Half dollars and quarters are in especially high demand. You'll get much more selling them on e-bay. A dealer will be more convenient, but they usually always buy them under spot price.

Hell, I'd even buy some from you.

Where would I go to melt them? I am going to Houston in the upcoming week

yeah, don't worry about that,
silver coins still carry value, not just as silver, but as functioning currency.
With the size of that collection, you're talking easily over a thousand more in profit by selling them as is

Not only did my grandfather leave the coins to my family, but he also had several books of coins. These books of coins, each have a certain date, mint location, grade, etc. are mostly complete. There are about 15 types of books. They range from pennies to dollars starting around 1900 to 1970. The reason why I am telling you this is because I think these coins are the best of all of the coins and the rest he collected hoping silver prices will rise in the future. So eBay is a really good idea? I never really thought about that route.
