How far from the water can I put my wood duck box?

pond is dry and I don't feel like moving them. For some reason I remember 100ft?

You should be ok... we have some on telephone poles at our house that are about 50+ yards from water and the babies all make it to the water.


And I'm sure the pond is gonna fill up between now and May/June huh?

you betting on it? It was a pretty dry winter. Actually I'll probably get a batch way before then, late march early april. Last year I had two seperate lays in each box. The early ones usually don't hatch half.

Yeah I noticed we have had 2 hatches also... Idk where your pond is but I know ours will go dry and then a big rain comes through and adds a few feet pretty quickly

If I remember correctly from Delta research, hens will lead their brood to water as far away as 100+ yds. That's why you see some woodies nesting in more urban areas. All they need is a small drainage ditch that holds water and they will be fine.

And thanks for stimulating the woodduck population by putting up boxes!

pardon my ignorance, whats a wood duck box? sounds like something you make for wood ducks to nest in???

curious because ive got a good bit of wood ducks at my lake, but i would always love to see more

If you make them look up the dimensions, the hole has to be made a specific size to keep coons out
