salary dumps happen all the time
pre-La, gasol was not seen as an elite player by most people (including analysts). he was mocked about being an all-star once in memphis (getting his shot blocked by a guard didn't help). he was seen as a stat-compiler on a bad/average team who was soft as shite.

Um, they gave up his brother who is pretty good (15/10 guy last year), 2 first round draft picks, Javarious Crittenton, who was averaging 15+ ppg per 36 minutes at the time, and Kwame Brown.
Basically, the Lakers gave up their future C/PF who is a double/double guy now, 2 potential great draft picks, their possible future point guard who was playing great at the time, and Kwame Brown (well...he's big at least
)
