In college football, the ability to win championships depends in part upon the perceived strength ofn your conference. National championships and BCS title appearances are based on polling. Hence, I root for other SEC teams to win bowl games so that the SEC is considered to be the best conference in America. This redounds to LSU's benefit in years where LSU is competing for an NC appearance against teams from other conferences with identical records (see 2003, 2007).
In the NFL, there is no polling. Playoff seeding is determined by records and division championships. Super Bowls are determined by a playoff system. Hence, there is zero advantage in rooting for your mortal enemy.
exactly. also, sec tradition is obviously a lot richer than a day-before-yesterday commercial football conference. i could give two fricks about the three other teams. why should i care about them?
