I watched this last night and was amazed how big the classic arcade scene still is. Great documentary that really highlights how douchy Billy Mitchell (the former world record holder in Donkey Kong).

On Netflix if you haven't seen it.

Donkey Kong is still my favorite arcade game. The only place I've seen it recently is in Manitou Springs, CO. I bought DK64 just so I could get the add on of the arcade game.

What's interesting is that the guys who made the documentary said that they had to leave out a bunch of negative stuff about Billy Mitchell so as not to make it too distracting. But they've suggested that it's pretty dark stuff.

Three things you will learn from this movie.

1. Billy Mitchell is an epic douchebag.

2. Steve Wiebe is a class act.

3. Billy Mitchell has the most pathetic people clinging to his balls.

I really want to get that shirt but I figure having to explain what it reference would make me seem like a hue dork...

Now back to writing Beast Wars fan fiction.

Man on Wire gets a lot if love but this is easily my favorite documentary in recent memory. Steve Weibe is just such a likable guy. I teared up a few times watching this when he would start crying. I mean the guy just seemed to have never caught a break and giving how rediculous the guys in the video game organization were, it was impossible not to pull for him.
Great ending too.

I actually watched this again on Netflix a few days ago.

Billy Mitchell talks so much shite about how a score doesn't count unless it's done in public. After he sends in a video to be reviewed at Twin Galaxies, he answers the phone with a smug "World Champion Headquarters."

Makes you want to punch the guy in the face. His only redeeming quality is his wife's rack.

None of which changes the dishonesty of the filmmakers. To repeat: BM DID NOT even hold the record that Wiebe was attempting to break. It is incredibly disingenuous on their part to make it seem otherwise.

So surprised I was very entertained by this. The best kind of documentary...informative, entertaining, a bad guy, a good guy, tells a story within the frame of a documentary. Great stuff.

Well on topic, Wiebe recently secured the high score again

At the time of filming, the record was not held by BM. It was held by some other obscure guy that rarely if ever gets mentioned. I believe after the movie SW won and then BM reclaimed it and then SW won it again.

I just am very suspicious of the fact that the filmmakers did that. BM is clearly a tool, but I think he might have gotten a somewhat unfair shake in the film itself.

I saw this on the Wiki page for it, thought it was interesting:

quote:

The penultimate episode of The Shield named "Possible Kill Screen" was a reference to the film and served as a thematic representation of the episode itself.

Which is why I refrain from doing any research on documentaries before watching them. Most of them have an untold side of the story that goes along with them.

The same with biopics.

After I've seen them and have been entertained, I can find out the real scoop and satisfy my curiosity without ruining my viewing enjoyment.

And I think that Man on a Wire was oversold. I was a little bored with it.

I kind of agree. I thought The Bridge was much better.

The Bridge is very good. Not all that interested in watching The Wire, though.
