Final Fantasy
I cannot stand the fighting style implemented in those games. I bought the last one and it was just way too damn repetitive.

Morrowind and the Fallout titles were the best of the single player RPGs. I had over 100 hours of gameplay on Morrowind: Oblivion during undergrad. I played it for an entire semester and it had enough content to keep me interested.

I seriously hope that this MMO fever slows down. There can only be some many MMOs out there. Maybe the market will get saturated and they will start putting out single player rpgs again.

Oh and to whoever said that Fable 3 was the best he had played, that game was not worth the money. End rant.

Hope not, but that is the rumor.

Still seems like slim pickings for RPGs.

After Morrowind and Oblivion I was looking for something similar and got into Gothic and Gothic II which are both good and cheap these days. Not as much detail as Morrowind/Oblivion but I thought they were surprisingly good. Gothic III and IV supposedly are terrible which is too bad.

I didn't say all of their games were good but they put out The Elder Scrolls series which has been one of the best in my lifetime.

I think Bethesda has a serious problem with character design and story-telling. But yeah, good games.

I disagree and my point is that some of the companies that USED to put out quality single player RPGs appear to be moving to the MMORPG model.

As already mentioned KOTOR III was canceled for a MMORPG and Elder Scrolls may be a MMORPG.

Now, there may still be plenty of Japanese RPGs but I can't stand their linear emo nature anymore.

Fair enough. But if you take Bioware at their word, which I do unlike most other developers, the MMO will have more than enough single-player elements for your liking. You'll still have to pay a subscription fee to access them though, obviously. I'm not into MMOs either, but I don't blame Bioware for wanting to try their hand at one. They weren't even interested in making KOTOR II and passed it off to Obsidian, much less a third installment.

Fable III has been stripped of all RPG elements, anyway. Fable was a true action RPG, Fable II was less of one, and Fable III is a straightforward action/adventure game.

Gothic III is possibly the best game ever catastrophically bogged down by debilitating technical issues. It doesn't suck to play, in fact it's quite enjoyable and has a 3D Ultima IV style to it. But it sucks to run. I don't know what the current status is on patching that barely functional piece of shite, but I doubt you can play it without severe issues to this day.

I still give this award to Daggerfall.

I just read that TES 5 would be a direct sequel to Oblivion. FWIW

Here's where I read it, grain of salt and all that but it's as much rumor as anything else.

I've read that, but I've also read that the plot could follow Oblivion and still be a MMORPG.

So many idiots complained that Oblivion would have been better as an MMORPG, so it's entirely possible.

Same people who bitched about the real-time battle system in Final Fantasy XII and convinced Square to make the coat hanger abortion that was XIII.

Same people who bitched that Fable II's interface was too complicated and convinced Lionhead to remove menus entirely.

I could go on.

Once again proving my point that the single player rpg is dying.

You just added another reason. They think we all want dumbed down rpgs.

I was bummed to hear Fable III sucked. I never played 1 or 2 but was looking forward to 3. After reading all the reviews on here, I'll save my money for the next big rpg to come out.

I really enjoyed Fable III and I think most here did as well. Disappointing, yes. Stripped-down, yes. But still a lot of fun and humor to be had. You could probably rent it and get everything you want out of it, though.

I play LOTRO. Why would I want to play a single player RPG when I can be online playing LOTRO with my friends as a group.

Well the obvious reason being that it's inconvenient. You have to work your schedule around playing video games which is pretty silly.

I like playing single player RPGs because I can play them when I want and by myself.

And...I also don't feel like paying a monthly subscription price on top of the cost of the game.

The Nintendo DS is actually a solid RPG system. The newest Dragon Warrior came out for it and they have done remakes of the early Final Fantasy games.
