A playoff won't kill the regular season as long as it is limited to conference champs. What kills the regular season is wild cards. I would think BCS 6 + two highest rated mid-majors or independents.
Also, as already stated a home field incentive would further reinforce the importance of the regular season.

At least some people have a brain. No one is asking college football to go to a 82 game season. If you play 11-12 games and the only way to make the playoff is to win your conference every game matters and every team that gets in deserves it.
