Dissecting the Florida Fake FG

I just saw the feature video of Josh Jasper and Derek Helton that is posted on lsusports.net. During the feature they demonstrate the Fake FG and it answered a big question for me. Why the bounce and what happen? They said it was the first time it had ever bounced. So I went back and compared the clips. Florida actually defensed the play really well. The reason for the bounce was how fast the defenders were coming in which caused Jasper to go longer on his cut in to catch the ball. I was never sure if it was a short toss or what. Now I now the toss by Helton was perfect and Josh made a great play on the bounce. Had Josh made his usual cut to catch the ball the play would have blown up.

Les Miles sorcery is what made it work.

watched teh dudes on ESPN U do it outside their studio. everytime they tossed it it bounced where a kicker could pick it up. It wasn't as "lucky" of a bounce as we think it was. I bet atleast 70% chance it bounces that way since the toss was perfect from a angle standpoint...Just saying...

There is no way the toss was perfect. The toss was exactly lateral -- no way it was supposed to be cutting it that close to possibly being a pass instead of a lateral (in case it does get short-hopped). The toss is supposed to be backwards.
The fact that the ball bounced looked to be caused by a combination of the toss being too far toward the line of scrimmage (and maybe a little too low) and Jasper going a little too wide.
And, no way Jasper went too wide based on the rush. They obviously practiced the play ad nauseum and he is supposed to go to a specific pre-planned spot to receive the toss. Do you think he deviated from the plan knowing that he was not going where the toss was going to go and knowing that he would have to short hop the toss?
Watch the Flynn-David flip at 1:00 on this video to see how it is supposed to work.
