For a first time bow hunter? Never been before, but would like to start. I realize it's a pretty expensive investment, but for now I would just like a starter kit. Suggestions?

This should bring out some emotions from the bow crowd.

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

I would also look at pre-owned, but if you want a new bow that is sold as a complete kit and all you have to buy is a release and arrows this bow package has some good value.

bows depreciate the minute you touch them so go with pre owned.
Get parallel limbs not vertical
Get a draw weight that is right for you.
Dont focus too much on speed. A few ft per sec diff will not make that big of a real world difference.
go with carbon arrows and fixed blade broadheads too.
expect 3-400 min investment.

The only issue with pre-owned is knowing someone that knows at least some info on bows makes and models to know if you are getting a decent bow or a not so decent bow for the price being asked.
Also if the person you are buying it from is not willing to let you shoot it, walk away from the deal. You don't want someone else's problems.

I know a guy that is selling a bowtech tomkat. Comes with 3 gold tips and 3 broad heads and a Scott release. He want 450

If I was going to buy new for the first time I would wait until after season and buy one that is going on clearance at BassPro or Cabelas.

Wasn't the last year for this bow 08? Maybe someone can confirm, but I believe the bow in 08 could be had for 550 bucks maybe even cheaper....450 is to much for a 2 year old bow if its the make and model I think it is.
thats just my opinion.

I'll tell you this. If you dont hunt with a PSE, then you're a fig
j/k. I've got a PSE, but I'm not partial to it. Actually looking to trade up to something else. I thought about starting this thread today, just never did it. I shot the Redhead Cronik at BPS the other day and for $400 combo package, I was very impressed.

Nice...which pawn shop did you go to, and did they have more bows?

I tell everybody, if you get yourself a 2003-2004 Diamond at a good price...you are doing yourself a favor. They were trying to compete with Matthews and Hoyt around that time and made some of the best bows i've ever shot, so they will be a higher quality bow than most of your big name/cheap priced bows. They weren't BowTechs less exspensive bow back then.
Diamond Machete: Layed over limbs so you have less vibration. Only 32 inches long, so you can shoot out of any position. Extremely light weight. And still a very fast shooting bow.
That was the best selling bow when I worked in the pro shop.

Thanks for the input everyone. Ive decided don't know enough about bows to buy something pre-owned, so I'm going to go with either the Bear Charge or PSE Stinger. Thanks again for the help

Bows are different then a lot of other things in that you don't always get what you pay for and brand loyalty is not as common as it is in firearms. First, if you are a new shooter you want a bow that is going to be more forgiving. The old Matthews MQ1 comes to mind. My grandmother could pick it up and drive tacks at 30 yds. I'm not going to suggest brands or models to you as it's been some time since I was into bows enough to sample many different models and actually give you accurate information, but I will say that you don't need to let someone talk you into the best new thing out there. Get a good used bow that fits you. Shoot a couple years. Kill a couple of deer. Learn the ropes. Then go get a cadillac.

I bought a mathews z7 this year and I love it. It was my first bow but I shot a bunch of others before I decided on it.
I bought new but you can find a lot of good deals on pre-owned stuff.
