One story that goes with the lyrics is that villagers in a mission town were discontented with their lot in life and had begun to despise the missionary/mission who was providing for most of their needs but was unable to keep them warm.
Sure that they were being taken advantage of they burn, burn, burned down the mission to stay warm by the fire.
The leader’s wife ‘cried when they came to take him away!’
Of course they all died of hunger once the mission, that had cared for them for so long was gone.
Basically they burned down the village to save the village, not a good stategy.
(Note to our Professor Crowd: This story may or may not reflect actual historical events, I’m not sure, don’t care and don’t need a history lesson…)
