JJ checks down to those routes. Believe it or not but plays have certain route combinations that are designed to exploit certain defenses. Sometimes the short routes hold the linebackers up while the first down route comes open behind them. Our problem is our QB checks down to the short route as soon as he sees them open and doesn't allow our deeper routes to progress.

Its not that the play is designed to not get the first down. Its just that the coach isn't choosing to run a short side option.
