A few weeks ago there was a story out of Fayetteville about a female reporter being fired because she wore a non-hogs cap.Not only did the coach not want to take anymore questions from reporter in gator's hat, the station considered that remark serious and decided to part ways with her. They claim that the station promotes hog sports and there was no place for anything contrary.

On the other hand, we hear about reporters arguing with LSU Coach about the program he manages. No one in BR media market claims any pressure from LSU SID to moderate their coverage. Media in BR had grudging respect for Saban who was always curt and kept them at arms length - aight, it's time to move on! Current bunch of reporters seem to take more access to the program for granted - Why won't Les let us talk to Lee? This from the days when OC and DC were not allowed to talk to the media.

Last night's show by Charles Hanagriff was a veritable bitchfest with the host's certitude about the future of the program. In various segments there were discussions about the impact of negativity on recruiting, booing in the stands, and respect for players and coaches. That cat may have already been let out of the bag. I hope we do not have see the effects of pervasive negativity, should the tigers have a sluggish stretch - Hope they have a clean, crisp game. More importantly, media should monitor its tone before it bites the hand that feeds it.

We are barely a newspaper and 1-and-half radio station market. We look at NOLA and Shreveport writers for alternate views. Until we develop into a mature market, media personalities should temper their narcissism towards their words/voice. They need rival voices to challenge their views - not just sycophants who concur and echo their sentiments.

Media should not only remember their plight of the 90s, when they were unable to find enough interest to fill airtime, they should also remember hosannas in praise of Saints and their fan base. In large markets where people have more to do than just follow their local football team, you may not find the passion of tiger fans. With that passion comes a responsibility to nourish it.

No one in BR market is behaving like the hog sports market. Does that represent a remarkable restraint on part of LSU and the independence of media? Or does it represent unhinged, flow with the wind attitude of the prevailing mood?

The Advocate, WAFB, etc do not work for LSU. They have opinions like everyone else.

The woman who wore the UF hat to the Arky presser perhaps made a dumb move, but I think the fact she was fired is idiotic.

Are you serious? What local reporters argue with Miles? They all pretend that he is not a terrible coach so they can keep getting free monday buffets.

I've been saying for years that government institutions need to crack down on the media.

How are we supposed to control the flow of information if the press is allowed to disseminate information unfettered?

Preseason polls are an excellent example. These obviously serve no purpose, and often times are detrimental to the national perception of our team. We need to supress the printing of the opinions of the members of the press.

thought provoking....if you consider the media as nothing more than a platform for commercial interests, then it it easy to understand how they think and what they present.

nice change of pace.

As if we didn't know this already...people will bitch about anything. Most complaints I hear from the BR media is that they are too soft on LSU but you feel they're too critical.

To your broader point, I'm glad to see the BR media being critical when there are obvious issues. I much prefer this to being the lapdog of the program like you imply is a good thing in places like Arkansas. In 2010 there are many outlets for sports info, this board being one of them.

Second, who do you imply should "muzzle" the media? WTF is this, Venezuela, Cuba, North Korea, Iran? frick no "they should not be muzzled any more than you should be allowed to write this shite on a message board accessable by those with an internet connection in the free world.

YellowShoe, you are a true niggler!

Do you not realize that the BR media's coverage of LSU football is already as soft as it gets?

We have a lot of problems with our program right now. Snarky coverage is certainly not one of them

Well, the truth is, LES is the one who created this effect. And here's why:

He provides VERY little access to reporters. They really don't have the pulse of the team as the season progresses and they certainly don't have specifics.

This is compounded by not only Les's bewildering style of verbal communications but by his need to keep the details close to the vest.

I think, quite naturally the media feels a little sheepish because they can offer their audience only the same re-treaded SPECULATION that the fans already know.

Les leaves himself without media allies because he doesn't offer them the "inside scoop" that the coaches with political saavy do. They might like him for his decency, his humanity, but he sure makes it hard for them to do THEIR job.

I think Les has poor instincts with the media. He should open the door a LOT more. This would be in HIS best interest. Remember when something goes wrong, it helps to have a reporter in your corner saying "But Les went over that at practice with JJ for an hour Wednesday" or "Les specifically addressed that issue with us last week " .

Listening to Hangriff, cauble, Ott etc it is obvious that there is a SIGNIFICANT "eyerolling" factor growing in the media, and that is seldom good for anyone.

No freaking way. The media is paid to evaluate the program and they should do so objectively.

Unlike certain boards that seem to imply that you have to talk nice about LSU or risk being banned.

You must have been a big fan of the Nazi's back in the 30's and 40's.

The responsibility of the media is never to "nourish" the tradition of a team it covers or to stifle honest analysis or refrain from asking critical questions about coaches, players, or the progam in general.

The BR market is already soft by anyone's standards.

Any good market deserves a watchdog media.

Interesting post, but this is an opinion board. Do you just ask a bunch of questions, or do you give the answers?
