Is JJ's upside enough to contend for an SEC championship?

JJ has shown some growth. JJ can achieve a good completion ratio and avoid INT's. JJ is good at protecting the ball (goo ball handler). JJ can throw a nice spiral and display good accuracy when he has a pocket, and reasonably good on the roll out also.

JJ needs improvement in seeing the field and progressing through his receiver options. JJ struggles with executing the option. JJ seems tentative to throw and execute the bubble screen and screen passes in general.

With the seeming improved Offensive line and running game, is JJ's upside good enough to lead LSU to consistent offensive production under Gary Crowton's scheme? Can LSU really challenge to win the SEC West and SEC with JJ at the helm?

Flynn needed a lot of time and was a 5th year Sr to come into championship form (when healthy).

Can JJ get there this year? Next year?

yes, but the defense and running game need to kick arse.

After the UNC game, I'm more worried about our defense and our unwillingness to get the ball to RS as a playmaker.

Yeah, why not? It's not like any of the other SEC teams QB are going to be mentioned in the heisman race this year. If they can win the championship then why can't we? (other than our coaches spoiling it for us)

Of course.

JJ is #47 on our list of worries. He's not the second coming of Joe Montana, but he'll be fine. 15 for 21, 2TD and 1 int (from memory) is just about all we need week in and week out.

YES! if the defense holds the other teams to 10 points per game we could win 10-11 games.

We almost beat Alabama with JJ/JL a year ago, so if either has improved and plays to their ability, then of course we can get there this year. The key is having a good game when we need the QB to have one. It is going to happen at some point this year, and JJ needs to be able to succeed when the pressure is on. I think he can.

If the JJ that beat Ga Tech ever shows up, we can beat anyone.

All of JJ friends and relatives cannot change the fact of what he is. You are what you are. He is no SEC QB.

we were a couple plays from winning the West last year (bad INT call, bad clock management).

And JJ is better this year, so yes.

We actually don't know this. He might have been in "championship form" earlier, but we had an even better starter in Jamarcus Russell, so we didn't need to rely on Flynn until his senior year.

If your question were about the offense as a whole, I would not be confident, because line play, fumble problems with the RBs and play calling would all be issues of concern. But since your question is solely limited to Jefferson, I think the answer is yes, he could get there this year. Though he made a couple of mistakes against North Carolina, he did play pretty well overall. If we had all the other components working right, he could be good enough not to keep an otherwise championship-caliber team from winning the championship.

I don't think JJ will be a game changer. I think his skills are good enough though with a very good running game and a good defense to challenge for the SEC. He isn't going to lift the team by himself though, isn't that kind of player.

Think about this (yes, coulda/woulda/shoulda). Last year, we had a legitimate shot at beating Bama. The clock management at the end of the Ole Miss game was not JJ's fault (although other parts of that game were). We walk away with both of those wins and we win the SECW.

I think this team is good enough to win the SECW ... this year ... with JJ. Would I wager money on it? Probably not.

Can this season go south? I would say that we are at a crossroads.

2008-09 is similar to 1996-97. Are we about to have 1998-99 ... or is this the beginning of the next run? I'm actually not sure.

It's only people who blame JJ for Crowton's incompetence that question JJs ability while often suggesting at the same time that JL, who completed a mere 40 percent of his passes last season, should be the starter over JJ, and never mind the fact that JJ was 15 for 21 for 151 yards and 2 touchdown passes last Saturday including a beautiful 51 yard pass to RR, he still gets the blame for Crowton's incompetence.
