I believe that the suspected players show up on the field. Take a probation risk? The players in question could cry that their rights were violated by being benched if they are found innocent. Not playing effects posssible future income.
And probation isn't all that bad. You can even win a BCS Championship while on probation.

Depends on the probation. The coaches' poll for years did not include teams on probation, but I think they considered "on probation" to mean ineligibe for postseason play. So, a team could technically be on probation but the sanctions might not include a postseason ban, in which case they might be eligible for the coaches' poll and thus have a chance to win the BCS title. However, obviously a team that is ineligible for postseason play cannot play in the BCS NC game and thus cannot win the BCS championship.
