What is the 'spray' on the field

of the Superdome? Why do I see what looks like a water spray when the players or the ball hits the field? Is it water or some kind of powder?

The new field seems to have white filler instead of the standard black that you usually see.

It's like rubber pellets. Maybe the white is going to be the new trend.

I thought it might be some sort of powder to prevent burns when they slide on it?
