Biggest we killed was 10'-11" but it was skinny. It had gotten hooked on a gar fish jug and hadn't eaten in a long time. Been on there long enough for the steel wire wear into his jaw. Gator's head was wider than his body.

Biggest I killed was 11foot 11 inches and that is out of about 600 gators that I've killed. I've seen quite a few over 12 foot and two over 13 foot. Once they get over 12 feet they get to be monsters. The two 13 footers I've seen had a F-150 truck bed dragging arse. It was amazing how big those things were.

I'm sure you are right. I know another thing we always did was to shoot the gators a few times, especially with the big ones. I would never trust one shot to kill a gator. Usually shoot two-three times behind the skull or in the ear with a .22 long rifle. An extra bullet makes me feel better at least.
we do it from the bank, but we pull them in slowly like y'all were saying to keep them "calm."
but we also use a 30-30 so there really isn't any doubt.

We use a 22 long also. Bullets are cheap so we'll put a few in them. Sometimes take a knife and cut the spine in back of the head.

why not just use a pole with a thin long spike on the end? Would that work? Anything bigger than a .22 would damage the gator skin, right?

kinda off this topic but i talked to my buddy who lives near sorrell on grand bayou. he knows several of the guys on the show. his wife grew up with dale.
she is now on his arse to get rid of his 20 beagles and start hunting gators for money instead of rabbits. he said "i have been listening to her shite since she watched that show!"

You can use bigger than a .22, you just have to be careful on where you shoot it at, the angle, etc. I've shot gators with my .243 from 80 yards before just puts a huge hole in the top of the head. I used a .22 mag for shooting them about 10-15 feet away if I couldn't get close with the .22 LR. Like the other poster said, a regular .22LR is just good because it does the job, the bullets are really cheap, and you can do lots of target shooting while hunting.

i am not sure why but I would have to say it is because of the deeper water. For some reason the gators that come from the channel and mississippi have much more girth. However they do not tend to get as long. A 12 footer is not that uncommon but you do not see that many. Out of 200 a year we normally kill one or two that size.

I used to catch em up to 10' using a stout sapling with 50 foot of nylon rope(at the end of the rope a strong wire loop). Tape the rope on the sapling with the wire loop on the end. One drives the boat, one holds the rope, one slips the noose over the Gators head and jerks. Gator hauls arse breaking tape away from pole.
When you get the gator to the boat you grab him when its mouth is closed and hold on....rope dude helps and wraps his jaws with duct tape. get him in shallow water....duct tape his legs, struggle to get him in the boat w/o getting knocked out by the tail. Listen to him hiss all the way back to the camp. Pull out vintage 30-30 and shoot him in the head.Skin him and fire up the pit.
Disclaimer: not to be tried by greenhorns, nimrods, or knee booter's.

a .22 long is fine a magnum better. But belive this or not I have seen gators shot with a .357 at point blank range and just make a blister on his head. The big bullets do not penetrate like a .22 does that close.

Where at again? The spillway can mean a few different places to me.
