Don't exactly know how to assess this analysis, but everything said here seems logical. I am a typical fan. Translate that to means that I probably don't know as much as I think I do.
The Elliot Porter thing will be another reason for people to vilify Miles; however, from what I have read, he did play it by the book. Maybe the book needs to be re-edited, though.
Having Wing take the shirt might have made more sense, but I am not the coach. From all that I know and have observed about football over the years, I wuld have to say that as the lines play on both sides of the ball, so goes the team. Getting protection and getting a fiercesome rush helps us to move the ball while forcing turnovers and hurries on the other side of the ball.
It does concern me that "attrition" has taken its toll on the line. Every time the ball is snapped, it's like a controlled car accident. The liklihood of injury is always present, but line play seems to put someone in greater jeopardy. Just my opinion, and I am certainly open to one of the resident football wizards on the board to correct me. It seems to me that me that we need every warm body we can get our hands on, and they need to be on the practice field early to learn the game and appreciate the speed of play.
AS an aside about Porter and the "grey shirt" thing, he is a young man, a very young man, and I wish him the best. I would have reacted differently, though. I love LSU, and I would have killed to run through the tunnel out of the north endzone. I would have loved to tell my grandchildren that I played on "that very field." I wished he would have stayed, but when you are young and full of desire, you want to play.
When Miles said some things about learning the game, bulking up, and developing physically, I believe those are good arguments. Unlike the idiot (Doyel) who wrote that he essentially sits to the right of the devil in hell, I don't think he did anything unusual or illegal. It is a SEC practice, a bad one, but still within the confines of the rules. This practice has to stop, however. If my kid had been on campus and then found out that he would have to pay his own way for a semester and sit out, I would have been pissed. But if you really want to be a Tiger, you stay, accept the occasional unfairness of life, and become a better person for the adversity. From what I see of Miles' public personna and comments that others have made about him, I do believe he would have helped the kid and rewarded him down the line. Am I a positiger viewing the coach through rose colored glasses? To some degree, yes, but realistically it is his decision that he will eventually have to account for. For the TEAM'S sake, I hope the first post proves to be correct.
OK, LAY INTO ME!!!

Shouldn't this post be on the rant?

Thanks for the well thought and written post. It was very refreshing. I too hope Porter takes the Gray Shirt like Rocky Duplesis did!

A rare flash of clear-headed thinking on the rant!
