Not JUST because he tragically died young, but because he passed while still playing for LSU.
You can't just retire someone's number just because they died young while playing at LSU. You can certainly honor that person in other ways, but number retirement is the ultimate honor saved only for the greatest players in their sport who have very special accomplishments. Wally has not earned that honor.
