I am the same way. I like Beamer, Bobby Johnson, Butch Davis, Richt, Mullen, and a number of others. In none of those cases is it because I think the coach makes the team "more" beatable than if they had a hypthetical "better" coach.
Likewise, I don't like Petrino, Tuberville, Saban, Spurrier, and a number of others. In none of those cases is it because they are good coaches (although in that list, they all are). I don't like them, and would not want them to coach at LSU for reasons unrelated to their ability to coach.

I guess it's,what you see is what you get with Les.
He uses the word "the want" repetitively.So I know he's not some fancy synonym using public speaker.
