africa should lose a spot to asia

Slightly misleading. North Korea stunk up the joint, but their qualification was a fluke. The #3 team, Australia, went 1-1-1, finished third in their group, and was eliminated on the GD tiebreaker. Hardly a poor showing.
And this was without a single Middle East qualifier. I'm not sure what happened to the Middle East this World Cup cycle. Normally, they churn out a credible side of two.

Yeah, I should have put 1-4-1; for some reason, I thought Australia went 1-2. I just figured if the #4 team looked so bad, I don't see how a 5th team would look better.
Doesn't FIFA have some really complicated formula to figure this out?

Probably. But I honestly don't know.

why?
because it makes their qualification ridiculously easier. That also assumes that half their teams will always be this strong.
last world cup they had 4 teams in, 3 made the round of 16, 2 made the quarters, and none made the semis.
in 2002, they had 5 teams in, only 2 made the round of 16, and only one went further (Brazil), making the final and winning it.
Doesn't this seem like a knee-jerk reaction, to give them an extra slot based on this world cup? and it's not even over yet...

WC 2014 should be a nightmare....

The Saudis got squeezed out by the Fightin' Kim Jong Ils, and Bahrain lost the playoff to New Zealand (easier to understand now). Iran had an off year. They should have a team or two next time. Japan, Korea and Australia are legitimate WC teams. (Australia's 4-0 blowout to Germany doesn't look so bad now, does it?) They should stay at 4.5 slots, though. There's a pretty sharp drop off after the top 3. Gives everyone else something to play for.
CONMEBOL looked great after the round of 16 and the quarters, but they won't get a team in the finals. It's Germany/Spain vs. Netherlands for an all-UEFA final (again). Explains why the European Championships are the second-most-popular tournament after the WC.

Yeah my argument proved to be invalid.

I still think this shows Europe is overrated. They get, what... 14 bids? The top tier teams are awesome, but we're not talking about them. We're talking about the rank and file teams. Number of bids isn't about how mahy GREAT teams you have but how many GOOD teams. Europe grossly underperformed, and the fact Germany and Spain are has no bearing on that.
Long-term, I'm willing to call it an off-Cup for Europe, who usually does better and has lots of depth. But Africa has got to lose a bid. They are behind Asia in almost every metric, yet they have more bids.

Move Israel to the Asia grouping as well as Kazahstan

Isn't Israel in UEFA due to safety concerns? I mean, can you imagine them qualifying against Syria or Saudi Arabia?
Posted on 7/5/10 at 11:21 am to Baloo
Politics politics. How can countries be allowed to host games when they can't guarantee safety of the teams? If Iran wouldn't play Israel then the fault lies ith Iran, not Israel. Just the same I wouldn't want to go play North Korea anyway.
Geographically Kazazkstan belongs withe Central Asian countries. Israel should play Jordan, Syria etc. I obviuosly recognize your point.

well it doesn't really matter... it's close enough. cyprus and turkey are right there. kazahkstan doesn't really matter and besides russia had a team from vladivostok in their top division once.
