Watched this movie for the first time last night, the special edition version. It definitely felt like a James Cameron film, similar to Avatar in that it was maybe a little too long and preachy. Little slow at times. But it still had the signature cool plot and special effects, and fantasy aspects to it that are appealing.

I liked it. I actually like the extended edition better.

What did they add in the extended edition?

It's pretty interesting to read about the filming of this movie. The cast went through hell, and it was filmed in an abandoned, uncompleted nuclear power plant:
quote:
Underwater scenes were filmed in the containment building of Cherokee Nuclear Power Plant, an unfinished nuclear power plant near Gaffney, South Carolina, in the United States. It took seven million gallons (26.5 million liters) of water to fill the tank to a depth of 40 feet (12 m), making it the largest underwater filming set ever constructed. The depth and length of time spent underwater meant that the cast and crew sometimes had to go through decompression.

I liked it when it came out but after a few repeats I didn't like it as much.

Really, the shortened version never made sense and the extended version adds the tidal wave scenario and explains a lot more about the aliens.

Sounds good. I will have to pick up a copy of the extended edition
Always thought they left out too much regarding the aliens.

The rig set was still at that abandoned nuclear plant until a couple of years ago.

Yeah, the extended movie doesn't have too much extra footage but changes the whole complexion of the film.
