Question...
Jacobs people carrying guns... why? The smoke monster can't be harmed by a gun. You can kill his followers, but not him. So what's the point of lugging a heavy gun everywhere you go?

It seems Jacob's people weren't completely sure what they were dealing with when they first came to the Island on Ajira 316. Recall the showdown that Bram and Jacob's people had with FLocke in the foot of the statute in LAX, where they opened fire on FLocke before he turned into the black smoke and proceeded to kill all of them. Obviously if they absolutely knew who/what they were dealing with they wouldn't have even fricked with him.
