Watching on KLAF. Is the turf new for this season? Must suck to slide on.

How someone can't maintain real grass in South Louisiana is beyond me.

Yes it's new for this season. And it plays just like real grass. It's not the same turf from the astrodome back in the day which everyone seems to assume.

the only thing you have to do is start your slide a tad bit earlier, but the speed of the ball plays just like it would on real grass.

And installing the turf saves a lot of time and money. Our players used to wake up at 6 in the am to maitain the field. Now all they have to do is upkeep on the mound.

And I would suggest you ask LSU how hard it is to maintain grass in the south cause their fields are always crappy looking

I don't think that anyone would assume that they put 30 year old technology astro-turf on their field.

Also, went to the Box last night and the field looked great. Sort of surprising because they've always had trouble maintaining it at the old Box, but it looked very good.

Tulane installed this turf last season at Turchin and their grounds guys love it. The only thing they really have to worry about is keeping the surface groomed so it doesn't create any wicked hops for the fielders. Which basically means running a cart with a groomer behind it for a couple of hours.

Guess I'm just a traditionalist. Just doesn't have the feel of true baseball without the old grass and dirt.

Wow, have you even been to the new Box? It just won an award for heavens sake.

Why don't they just hire people.

How is that saving money? They paid the players?

I researched this at my old job. The life cycle cost of artificial turf is actually more than natural grass. Artificial turf requires more maintenance than you think. It has to be raked almost as often as natural grass is mowed. Artificial turf also has a very short life.

the turf also drains ridiculously well, pretty sure tulane hasnt had a rainout since it was installed.

I heard that won of the Cajuns hurt their ankle recently. Did the turf monster play a role?

UL doesn't have the budget to properly maintain the field like it should be (staff, and fertility programs). That being said, it's ridiculous to get on here and say it's a better option. Fake over Real is NEVER a better option, only a NECESSARY one (indoors) sometimes.
