As a general rule of thumb, a basic house (nothing extravagant, but not a plain box) cost roughly $70 a square foot, something extravagant will run you $100 to $140/SF.
Renovations can be tricky because if all you are doing is adding open space (bedroom or office), then it will cheap per SF, but adding plumbing (bathrooms) or a kitchen (lots of cabinets and appliances), then the price goes up significantly.

Dude, have you built or renovated a house recently? You're not building a new house for $70/sf unless it's a shotgun house with zero amenities. $100-$140 will get you a nice modern house, but hardly anything extravagant. And 100-140/sf doesn't include the cost of the property.
If you don't believe me go price one out or talk to some builders.
