Michigan and UCLA could 0-12 in football and yet their academic reputations wouldn't be tarnished one bit. Some of you need realize that for Louisiana to have continued economic success a world-class research university like LSU is a must and frick Tulane.

You do realize that both California and Michigan are on the verge of being bankrupt? So it is okay for the schools to be good in research while unemployment in the states are above the national average and the states can hardly afford to keep the doors open? The states have to cut spending, I'm not saying they cant do it other places but hey have to cut it from somewhere. If not education then where? Entitlement programs? We are lucky to have an athletics program that helps support the university, many other programs are a drain on the universities they represent. you want to save jobs in the schools cut title 9 for athletic programs, if it doesn't pay for itself, cut it. But then that would go against all liberal ideology.

Michigan is in better shape than California in regards to their budget, but both are in tough shape. But cutting education is absolutely the wrong thing to do if you wish to raise the incomes of a state and provide for industries that offer more stable employment.

Now last time I checked Michigan and UCLA had great atheltic programs and continue to have world-class academic reputations. I think it's great LSU athletic department pays for itself and makes a profit, but LSU needs to be seen as an educational instution first. It would be best for LSU if the profit making athletic program shifted its profits to the academic side after offering fair raises and paying for maintenance and reasonable upgrades in facilties.

Why can't LSU have both?

Additionally the last time I checked Michigan and California had lower rates of poverty than Louisiana, higher per capita icomes and a higher percentage of people with college degrees versus Louisiana and they both have universities with well-regarded athletic programs with multiple national championships: UCLA, Cal Michigan, Michigan State, etc in sports like football, basketball, and hockey and many others.

But they are not gutting the core of the school like LSU is set to do.

The economy is very bad in Michigan, California, and OH also. Louisiana's economy never really suffered here thanks to the 200Billion the feds gave for Katrina.
