the FACTS are....

1) if our O would have score only ONE more FG in two games, we would have been 11-2
2) if our O would have scored 11 more points in the other 2 losses, we would have been 13-0
3) if our offense could make a first down and not go 3 and out so much, our defense rankings would have been much higher. these rankings are based on total yards allowed.
4) our scoring defense did remarkable well for a team that was on the field so long.

now, flame away how our defense was the reason our offense couldn't control the ball.

i am happy with our defense and i believe it kept us in every game we played. we need an offense. it's that simple.

Spot on GrandDad. We've just got to keep tellin' it like it is. Chief will bring in his kind of Dlinemen and his scheme will provide a championship quality defense. Hell, the defense played well enough to win it all this year. The '07 offense with this years defense and the Tigers are playing tonight IMO. In other words we didn't have a Dorsey or even a Steltz but the D was solid other than pass rush and the stats were inflated by the inept offense. In fact if the '07 offense had played this years defense would have been rated much higher than 12th. It'a a team sport and what each phase of the team does directly effects the others.

Couldn't the reverse be true?

If our D would have stopped Ole Miss 1 more time
If our D would have stopped Penn State 1 more time

Argument can be made for both sides and you people are arguing a circle.

I agree wholeheartedly that its the offenses fault that make some defensive stats deceiving. I also agree this yrs defense was head and shoulders above last yrs with the excepton of a pass rush. The Dline play really hurt this yr, but I believe that with player turnover at the majority of positions and a yr under Chavis scheme they will be that much better next yr and hopefully the offense will stay on the field long enough to give the defense a rest.

We had the lead in the 4th against Alabama, Ole Miss, and Penn State.

It would have been nice if the defense could have held those leads.

Interesting enough, if anyone watched the Saints-Panthers game, Brian Billick was the annoucer. He also knows a few things about defense being that he was the architect behind the dominate Ravens defense of the early 2000s. He stated that two most important statistics in all of football are the turnover margin and what he calls the "big play margin" which is the difference between the amount of 20 yard plays you give up versus the 20 yard plays you gain. He showed these statistics in this NFL Season and 11 of the 12 playoff teams were in the top 12 of this statistic.

If you look at LSU this season, we did pretty well in both creating TOs and preventing big plays on defense. While we didn't turn the ball over much on offense, we didn't create big plays.

I'm not willing to throw the defense under the bus just yet. I think if we can somehow get an "average" offense (like ranked in 50s), we could be dangerous with our defense.

the reverse could partially be true but it wasn't. in other words if our O made long, sustained drives and our D couldn't get off the field (but still kept the other team from scoring), our TOP would still be about 50% of the game (instead of about 40%) and we would have won more games. in that example, both offenses making long drives. instead our O kept doing 3 and outs and our D had to go back out there. by the 4th qtr, they were gassed. yea, our D played more vanilla than i would like to see, but they didn't give up big plays and easy scores. also, the scheme a D plays is also situational; you can take more chances (blitzes; man coverages) with a decent lead; something we never had.

yes, we lost 4th qtr leads against bama, ole miss and penn state. remember how many points we scored in those games in the fourth? we pretty much got shut our. our D could not hold the lead for 15 minutes because they were gassed and our O did nothing. its easy to blame the d when they give up the losing points late, but all points, no matter when scored are of equal value.

Your are correct, we held Penn State to one touchdown, they tried to give the game to us with turnovers we just couldnt come up with any of them.I believe on a dry field we beat them hands down. But like Dandy Don Meridith said''if if's n but's were candy n nut's we would all have a merry Christmas.''

If you don't think that Florida could've scored on us at will if they had wanted to, than you my friend are a moron. Teams knew that our offense sucked, and that as long as they didn't turn the ball over or do anything stupid, our offense could not score if they had to drive the whole field. Therefore, these teams shut it down on offense. That's not a great defense for LSU. It's an ok defense and a horrible offense.

Hey Hoss, how many times did our GREAT defense make Florida punt. How bout once? Yeah, great defense my arse!

Um, NO he wasn't. Billick was the OFFENSIVE coordinator at Minnesota before being hired as head coach at Baltimore. He was hired to improve the offense, which he never did. I believe that Marvin Lewis (Bengals HC) was the architect of that defense.

Exactly. I posted this earlier...

The defense was better this season, but it got over-hyped from the Florida game. Sure Florida only scored 13 points, but the fact of the game was they were trying to play ball control offense and get out of there doing as little as possible to get the win with a not 100% Tebow. They only had 7 true possessions in the game and drove down the field on us in 5 of them. This may be preaching to the choir, but the Florida game really over-rated the defense this season from people that only watch the scoreboard.

So you actually believe that Florida tanked their offense against LSU? Of all the really stupid shite I have read from you rantards, this has to be the worst. Please go shoot yourself before you reproduce.

Uncommon Cents I bet 85% of your post have been just bashing people on this board. Nothing you say helps anyone's perspective on the issue discussed.

I'm fairly optimistic about the D. I don't think its gonna be that dominate D we had for awhile, but I do think it'll be good enough for us to win. Bend but don't break and get a few turnovers. I can live with that. Just get some pressure on the QB please.
